Oshawa, ON has witnessed a loss of true metal bands as the current trend swings towards kids starting hardcore groups. Despite this, Left Hand Creation are fighting the tiring battle to keep death metal alive in the region. Bassist Rob Holden has decided to grace Arcane Records with his top 10 albums of 2011. Read it below.

10. Deicide – “To Hell With God”

Following the 2008 release of Till Death Do Us Part; Deicide captures the essence of their older 90’s sound with To Hell With God. This album is what you expect from Benton and company, with its crushing heavy tunes, the over the top Christian-bashing lyrics, the always evil sounding undertones, and the lightning quick, sweet melodic leads of Ralph Santolla (Obituary, Death), with the catchiness of Jack Owen (Cannibal Corpse). The album was pushed back by nearly 2 years but was worth the wait by long-time Deicide fans as they show once again why they have been front-runners of the death metal scene for 20 years.

09. Belphegor – “Blood Magick Necromance”

Since Belphegor’s Lucifer Incestus album, Belphegor has delivered consistently epic and pioneer albums for the blackened-death genre. Blood Magick Necromance is no different. In the first ten seconds of the album, Belphegor brings the listener right back to where they left off in Bondage Goat Zombie. Produced by Peter Tagtgren (Hypocrisy, Pain), this album takes over as the best production value a black metal band has ever achieved. As huge as this album sounds, I found that it doesn’t seem to have a best or worst song. Nevertheless, the entire 40 minutes is crushing and epic, which is what has been mastered by this band in the last 12 years.

08. Burning Caskets – “To Burn A False Prophet”

Burning Caskets first full length album To Burn A False Prophet was no trial and error situation. This southern Ontario band put out their material and hit the nail on the head. For a relatively unknown band internationally, the production value exceeds all expectations. The vocal style of Korey Arnold (Rotting) fits in perfectly with the oldschool death metal sound, with a higher raspier thrash-like vocal often harmonizing with the lows by guitarist Braedon Sharpe. In an era of metal where technical proficiency and speed is often revered, Burning Caskets reminds us where the roots of death metal lie, with their wealth of experience and musicianship by those who have lived through the scene during the entire life of death metal. The songs “Kill The Pacifist” and “Covenant Of Hate” suggest that Burning Caskets have the potential to become front-runners in the Canadian death metal scene.

07. Obscura – “Omnivium”

If someone were to tell me that I would enjoy Obscura’s new album more than their previous album Retribution, I would have simply punched that certain someone in the balls. Nevertheless, Omnivium was released, and has become one of my personal favorites. The album is even more progressive than their previous works, and is a must-have for shred-heads all around. When metal heads say the phrase “face-melting” in terms of metal, I think of this album.

06. Neuraxis – “Asylon”

Neuraxis has recently become one of the many reasons why Canada has such a great reputation in terms of death metal. Asylon quickly picks up where the extraordinary album The Thin Line Between finishes off and carries the listener into a maze of crushing drums, melodic and technical guitar work, progressive bass riffing, complete with rapid-fire time signature changes. I’ve headbanged so hard that I have a permanent imprint in my chest where my chin continuously smashed into it. Asylon satisfies every need of a full-fledged death metal fan.

05. Origin – “Entity”

Most death metal fans will not need an explanation of Origin’s musical sound. They are forever revered as the very best in what they do. What they do? Musical perfection. The first riff of the album explodes into a fantastic rendition of what to expect for the next hour. Simply put, this is the fastest album in existence (only matched by their last album, Antithesis). Entity is without a shadow of a doubt exactly what fans expected from the tech-death Titans, and will more than satisfy any metal fan who’s brain can follow at 300 BPM.

04. Abysmal Dawn – “Leveling The Plane Of Existence”

Abysmal Dawn just may be the most well rounded band in the death metal genre. Their first album, Programmed To Consume was a great precursor to what was to come, and showed the bands potential to be great, but was missing some of the depth of modern day metal bands. Leveling is the next chapter, and combines the perfect amount of heaviness, catchiness, melody, tech, progression, and experience. For those who need to listen to an album that perfectly embodies the death metal genre, this album is for you.

03. Decapitated – “Carnival Is Forever”

For myself, this was the most anticipated album of the year. Their previous album Organic Hallucinosis being one of my favorite albums of all time, I was nervous knowing that they would have a completely different line-up of musicians (due to their tragic history) for their next installment. Only the band founder, Vogg (guitar), would continue with the band (for obvious reasons). During my first listen- through of the album, I was not entirely impressed. There were many differences between their 2006 album and their 2011 album. However, upon giving the album many more listens, It became the catchiest and most raw and heavy album of the year. This album stayed in my cd player for over a month. Krim silenced critics with his stellar drum work, and Vogg’s guitar work is faster than ever before. Even the vocal style change proved necessary in the new direction Decapitated was heading. Aside from the titled track “Carnival Is Forever,” This album has proven not only to be one of the best albums of 2011, but the one of the best also in Decapitated’s career.

02. Fleshgod Apocalypse - “Agony”

Agony is a great example of the limitless boundaries of death metal. Fleshgod Apocalypse creates the most crushing music possible in today’s metal world, and combines orchestral string arrangements derived from the classical roots of their home country of Italy. Agony pushes the bounds of both heaviness and musical intelligence as they musically pound the listener with no stops between songs for the entire album. The music in this installment feels as though it were written by the stars in the universe, and not from long-haired, costumed headbangers from the other side of the world. This album, aside from all others on this list, would be a pleasurable listen not to just metal heads, but musicians worldwide.

01. Hate Eternal – “Pheonix Amongst The Ashes”

My apologies to all of the metal bands who put out an album in 2011, but if the masters of death metal decide to put out an album, who else really has a chance to get number one? Not to mention that this is also, by far, Erik Rutans and Hate Eternals best work to date. To start off with the first song, an instrumental call “Rebirth”, brings forth such a grinding heaviness that doesn’t slow down until the album is finished. I can’t pick a favorite tune, they are all incredible. Full on death metal epics. With each note in this album, the listener is made to feel surrounded by evil. I literally felt like I was doing something wrong each and every time I turned on this album. Pheonix Amongst The Ashes is the masterpiece of 2011, and has successfully set the bar for the upcoming metal releases of 2012.

Our friend Grace Méridan from the symphonic metal band Shield Of Wings has checked out a bunch of sweet albums from artists of all styles this year. She took time out of busy schedual to discuss her top 10 albums of 2011. Check out Grace’s top albums of 2011 below.

10. Arkona - “Slovo”

Being both a huge fan of both folk metal and different languages, from the deepest depths of the metal popped out Arkona. I’m not a huge fan of screams, but with songs like “Bol’ No Mne” there are perfectly positioned drops and you feel like you are being transported into a Soviet wonderland. I dub this high-energy Folklore and was excited to read of their attendance and participation in Metal Female Voices Festival X!

09. Ava Inferi - “Onyx”

Recommended to me be a friend, I had popped in Onyx and was surprised at how much the album haunts you with its atmospheric vibe. It almost has a mystical power that draws you in and teeters at your emotions, becoming moreso a work of art. It does tend to stay on edge of melancholia – so if you are looking for power metal or something with that staccato chorus, this isn’t it, but a good change to mix it up.

08. Crysalys - “The Awakening Of Gaia”

Power, Emotion, Theatricality + incredible form and structure = Crysalys. When I listened to their album, I got chills up and down my spine. Touched by the divine, Chiara’s voice plummets through yours ears like a hurricane and leaves you feeling as if you’ve just seen a fantastic opera at La Scala and wanting more.

07. Azam Ali - “From Night To The Edge Of Day”

Close your eyes and be transported through almost a storybook of wonder. Not only does Azam Ali allow you to meditate/soothe your soul but the contrast of her simple vocal lines to the exotic instruments almost clears your mind of all its impurities.

06. Rachael Yamagata - “Chesapeake”

Studying voice you know female altos are few and far between. So, when I came across Rachael Yamagata the first time, I was head over heels. Completely free, yet in total control she wraps you around with her voice like smooth velvet. When I heard her second album Chesapeake came out this year, I was in a mad rush to get it. In the first 30 seconds I was in love. It started out more lighthearted and progressed through the full range of emotions, but the lyrics were the Rachael that I have come to know and love such as in “Dealbreaker” and “Full On” - Ain’t everyone afraid of being figured out – They’re just a fraud, a blank charade – Some bluffing hand that’s been well played. Check it out!

05. Adele - “21”

I must confess, I knew Adele was a Grammy award winner for her album 19, but I had never heard this powerhouse sing before 21. Only to realize she WAS the actual age of her album title – leaving me all the more speechless to hear this powerhouse soul diva do her thang. I love the fact that she on a maturity beyond her age and almost paved her way into mainstream music beyond just an image but with true music craftsmanship.

04. Autumn - “Cold Comfort”

On repeat please. The deep symbolism of the vocal lines in the lyrics are phenomenally coupled with the dynamic placement of guitar arrangements of Mats and Jens. Simply put, I didn’t think it could get much better than Altitude, but Cold Comfort was a pleasant surprise from Autumn. I have not gotten a chance to see them live but if they are anything like the down-to-earth and lovely lead vocalist, Marjan, I’m sure it would be one you would not want to miss.

03. Evanescence - “Evanescence”

Being as this is this is first band that got me into the hard rock, goth and metal genres, I couldn’t wait to hear what my muse had up her sleeve after her hiatus. I won’t lie, at first, I wasn’t warming up to what I heard. “What You Want” was the first song that aired and it definitely had the appeal that was driven to the masses. But, after getting the album many listens – I realized how much I loved the elecro elements, how this album really returned to the root of Evanescence’s Fallen days and Loudwire really put it best, the “baroqueness of their sound.” Tell me, when does Amy Lee not fail to entrance us with her chord progressions and instrumental fusions?

02. Stream Of Passion - “Darker Days”

The world of female fronted metal is surely not a great one. Yes, there are bands popping up every day. Being a lead vocalist for a band (Shield Of Wings) who just released an EP this year, it really is interesting to listen to every little nuance or cultural influence you may hear in each track. Now, I’m no magazine reviewer, but I’m my opinion Stream Of Passion is going to hit the world by storm. Setting aside that they are going to support Epica on their new tour, the album in itself was pure magnificence. Listening to Marcela sing in Spanish in “Nadie Lo Ve” touches your heartstrings and she carries over guitar like an angel. And if you think that’s impressive, she also solo’s with her violin! Es una mujer con muy talento y no puedo esperar para verla cantar en vivo.

01. Leaves’ Eyes - “Meredead”

If you are a symphonic female vocalist or avid symphonic female listener then you will love this album. I think every singer has a dream to do an album collaborating with other artists and making it even more special singing with your sister and in your native tongue! I loved the energy of this entire album, the Celtic & folk influences and even a myriad of languages! How can you go wrong with Liv Kristine when she takes you on this truly impressive compilation that wraps itself around every sound’s twist and turn. Listen to “Sigrlinn” and tell me you won’t give it a try!
